Foundation

To the humans building the corner sidewalk, sweating and stooped over hot summer pavement, smoothing seams into wet cement, the afternoon sun beating down on their backs. I saw your heads sweltering under your hats, focused despite your aching limbs.

I want to say thank you for your attention to detail— the careful precision that forges a path. Your heavy labor makes our life easier to move amidst traffic, to walk and stroll and wheel ourselves through the urban sprawl.

As I move through the city, I see things more clearly. I see the evidence of your quality and craft. In the sidewalks and curbs, in the freeways and driveways, in the slab of cement that holds the bones of my house. Your invisible labor is the foundation of everything. I see your hard work. I see you and I thank you.
